How Do You Set And Achieve Goals?

Anyone who has ever read any article about success or leadership, has consistently read about the importance and significance of goals. How many times have you been told to set goals, or personally felt the need to do so, only to feel frustrated that all too often your goals transform into little more than empty promises or platitudes? Attend almost any motivational or leadership seminar or program, and you'll be told that you need to set meaningful goals. But, how do you know what's so important to you that it will motivate you to achieve your success?

1. When was the last time you thought about your goals for the coming year? How easy an exercise for you was it? Were you able to put into words precisely what your goals actually were, as opposed to what you thought sounded good or was what others wanted to hear? Do your goals propel you forward with an action plan that makes sense, both from the standpoint of you following through and staying the course, as well as is the plan workable and achievable? Even more importantly, are your stated goals your actual goals? Are they something that will make a significant difference in your life, and are significant and essential to you?

2. What is your process for setting goals, and then developing them into a workable and important plan? Why have you selected and chosen these specific goals? What do you really want out of your life, and why are these goals important to you, or are they really? What are you willing to do to try to achieve your goals, and what will those things do for you? How do you measure your personal success and achievements?
When you evaluate your life, it is important to establish, at least in your own mind, what you would really like to accomplish. Think about how it might change or impact your life for the better. What might you be able to accomplish and do if you achieved your goals? What does success mean to you? Is it financial, monetary, personal, attitudinal, and/ or what would make you feel good about yourself because of what you offered to others, in terms of providing true value? Are your goals achievable, and if so, what must you do to actually achieve and accomplish? Understanding your own goals is often one of the most challenging things any of us have to do!
