Google Viewability Metrics Prove Viewable Ads Are 21 More Times Likely To Be Clicked

With today’s announcement of their viewability measurement tool, Active View, receiving accreditation from the Media Rating Council, Google released new data highlighting CTRs of display ads based on viewability metrics. According to their findings, users are up to 21 times more likely to click on a viewable ad.

The viewability metric measures the percentage of an ad that is viewable on screen and the length of time the ad is displayed. To meet the IAB‘s standard for viewable impressions, at least, 50 percent of the ad must be viewable on screen for one second or longer. After comparing ads by the number of seconds they were displayed on screen, Google not only determined that users are more likely to click on viewable ads, but that viewability metrics can identify below-the-fold areas that result in higher CTRs, providing publishers with more substantial below-the-fold advertising opportunities.
Google viewability chart
Google also found a correlation between CTRs and the length of time an ad is displayed, with a 125 percent increase in CTRs when an ad was viewed for more than 20 seconds.Lenght of time ad is displayed
While the general assumption has always been that viewable ads result in more successful campaigns, Google’s data provides quantitative evidence to support such assumptions. According to today’s announcement, Google believes viewable impressions will eventually become the standard measure for online advertising in place of the “served impression” metric currently being used.

How to Go Online?

It is needless to mention how important it is for any business to create his presence on the web. All of us know that ecommerce not only helps in generating more profits but it is also a great tool to market your business to larger masses in a very cost effective manner. So have you taken a step forward to be a part of this new market??? If not then what are you waiting for???

It is quite a simple process to start with ecommerce. Here are certain steps that can guide you the right way and save you from making blunders.

Step 1: Clearly define your business

It is the first and the most important step. You should first clearly define your business. Be sure of what products or services you want to sell and where you want to sell. You want to cater to local customers or you want to go international. This will give a clear picture of your business and related goals.

Step 2: Design a website

Website of any business acts as its face. It is an interface using which the customer makes his purchases and develops an experience. Make sure your site is intuitive, great to look at, easy to browse and should be able to hold the interest of the visitor so that he can make a purchase. Hiring professional web developers and designers can be a good choice as they create and deliver their services in a customized manner specific to your needs.

Step 3: Attract customers

Just creating a site does not mean it is going to sell. You need to make efforts to attract customers to your site. Make sure your site is SEO friendly, so that it is easy for the customers to search. If you have customer database, you can send them free mails stating the different products you have or offers you are giving.

Step 4: Payment options

Another important concern while starting with ecommerce is choosing the payment mode. There are different options like credit/debit cards, net banking, cash on delivery etc. You need to plan and visit your bank in this concern so that your payments come easy and without any hassles.

Step 5: Be quick to sell and deliver

Always be ready to sell. Make sure you have well maintained inventory so that there is no delay in the dispatch. Quick delivery always makes the customers happy. Never make them wait as it results into the feeling of dissatisfaction.

These are a few steps that can be of good help to you if you are planning to start with an ecommerce website. To stay in sync with the times, one needs to adapt the changes in the market and then make moves. Ecommerce is the easiest and cheapest way to reach out to the world.

6 Proven Styles of Headlines that Really Work

The headline is the first, and potentially the only, chance you have to make an impression on a reader. You may have just written the world’s best article, but it will all be for nothing if your headline isn’t up to scratch.
Great headlines grab attention and lure readers into reading the rest of the copy. Creating compelling headlines is a difficult process; even professional writers spend a considerable amount of time crafting winning headlines.
A crucial element of creating a winning headline is making a promise to the reader. It must offer the reader a substantial benefit or reward for them taking the time to read the copy.
Although creating compelling headlines is more of an art, than a science, there are still several types of headlines that are proven to work time and time again. Following is a selection of these “winning” styles of headlines.

Direct Headlines

Direct headlines are exactly what they say they are. They are straight to the point, with no attempt of wit or cleverness. The headline directly states the proposition.
Examples:
  • 50% of all Shoes
  • Free Cookies

Indirect Headlines

Indirect headlines are all about creating a certain level of curiosity, which is then answered by the content of the copy. Indirect headlines can also have multiple meanings.
Examples:
  • The Best Kept Secret in Media Planning & Buying
  • Plenty More Fish in the Sea

How to Headlines

How to headlines have been used forever, mainly because they work so well. Any headline that begins with the words “how to” has the potential to be a compelling headline.
Examples:
  • How to lose weight fast
  • How to Make Money Online

A Question Headline

Simply using a question as your headline is not enough. The question must be something the reader has the ability to empathize with or wants answered.
Examples:
  • What’s the Best Way to Build Muscle?
  • Who Else Wants to be Rich?

A News Headline

A news headline is all about creating headlines that are actually news. Many ads online use this technique, even though they aren’t actually news. This headline is best reserved for content that is actually newsworthy.
Examples:
  • New Diet Burns More Fat Than a Marathon a Day
  • Woman Discovers Cheap Alternative to Botox

Reason Why Headlines

These headlines give readers a specific reason to why they should read the copy. “Reason why” headlines work well as they contain specific numbers and facts.
Examples:
  • 101 Reasons to Join Greenpeace
  • 27 Ways to Make Money Online

In a Nutshell

Creating winning headlines takes practice, patience and a lot of testing. What may work for one piece of content, may be a complete failure when used elsewhere. Take your time crafting compelling headlines and don’t settle for anything that isn’t  your best.

Twitter Ads Introduces Keyword Targeting

Target By Keywords
Twitter took a large leap forward with their advertising platform Wednesday morning by introducing a new advanced interface that allows for keyword targeting. Twitter sent out a mass email to existing Twitter Ads users stating:
“You can reach users at the right time and in the right context based on keywords in their Tweets and the Tweets they’ve recently engaged with. Simply specify the keywords you want to target and then add on targeting for location, device and gender.”
The keyword targeting works by showing ads to Twitter users who have Tweeted or interacted with a Tweet that the advertiser is targeting. Twitter provided a couple of examples as to how the new feature might be utilized.
  • Travel brands can target newlyweds Tweeting about their prospective honeymoon plans.
  • Retailers can place discounts in front of fashionistas who engage with Tweets showing the latest designer jeans.
  • Bakeries can reach the hungry guy or gal who just Tweeted about their afternoon snack craving.

Advanced Interface

Advanced Interface Dashboard
The Advanced Interface feature has been available to some users since March (by invitation only) but went live to all users Wednesday (April 17).

Analytics

The new Advanced Interface also provides much more in-depth analytics on Timeline activity, interaction by followers, and tracking information on an advertiser’s website via a tracking code.
Timeline Tracking Dashboard

Conclusion

This is a brand new feature and only time will tell what affect this will have on Twitter Ads. But for now, this seems like a very useful new tool for the more advanced Twitter advertisers.

10 Tips For Making Money With Social Media

10 Tips For Making Money With Social Media image wp slider of make money bloggingTurning a profit using social media, for some, is as elusive as a white rhino. But, it doesn’t have to be. Think of social networks as a big party and try to fit in — not be the life of the party.

My Infographic, courtesy of my partner, Ideas and Pixels, shows great tools for making money with social media — and other tools for making money online. Many of these tools fit together to create an integrated online marketing strategy to support your online marketing goals.

But, you need to go beyond these tools to know HOW to apply them to making money with social media.
Here are 10 tips for making money with social media (notice none of them involve hogging the microphone):

10. Be authentic

Social media isn’t like traditional advertising and it shouldn’t look and feel the same. Social media is a community designed to share comfort, support, information, expertise, and entertainment. You need to develop a voice in social media — one that talks like a real person, shares like a real person, and that people can relate to as a real person. Share your foibles, mistakes, sense of humor, and what’s going on in your life. Let people backstage.

9. Don’t interrupt

If folks are having fun sharing on social networks, join in. Don’t bring the party down by talking about yourself. Have fun with them or create your own fun.

8. Leave them with something to talk about

Share something interesting — something of value. Social media is definitely a pay-it-forward world and if you don’t get that, then hire someone who does. I give away tons of valuable stuff — like the first chapter of my new social media analytics book. Grab a copy today and let me know what you think. No strings attached. And, if you give me feedback or edit my work, I’ll send you a PDF of the book when it’s finished. What a deal!

7. Follow your target market

Don’t fish where your boat is, fish where the fish are. You’ll be more successful. If the fish aren’t biting, move your boat. For instance, I used to get a lot of traffic to my website from Twitter — now, not so much. I still use Twitter, but I now focus on social networks that bring in traffic, especially the kind that will buy from me — my target market. I find Facebook much more valuable, especially my group, which I call my social media marketing tribe. Feel free to join us and share your great content with the group.

6. Build trust

Trust is a big word… it’s important. And trust in marketing is low because for years we’ve made promises to consumers then failed to meet our obligations. Firms have a lot to do to make up for this.

5. Engage

Get your target audience involved with you. Ask questions on Facebook. End your blog posts by asking for feedback. Participate in Quora conversations. And, make it easy for your target audience to engage. For instance, I use a plugin allowing visitors to comment using their Facebook profile. The plugin also brings comments from Facebook back to my blog. This increases engagement.

4. Build your community

Don’t just pretend to care about your visitors — truly care about them. That means responding quickly when they post a question or concern. Remember, social media is always on, so plan for responses during the evening and on weekends. When visitors share your content or comment on a post, thank them and consider ways you can repay the compliment.
Building community means being a good member of that community and helping everybody out.

3. Give value

Don’t think about yourself — think about your community. Why are they engaged with you? What are their pains? How can you help?

I recently met with a client interested in using social media to connect with younger prospects. Yet, they were uncomfortable when I suggested we find out what types of posts might help these prospects, they only wanted to talk about themselves in their social media marketing. FAIL!

2. Plan, plan, plan

You can never plan too much. And, planning isn’t done — you need to constantly update your plan as things change. I commonly suggest to clients that we meet on a monthly basis to review results and plan for the next month’s campaign. Putting your social media marketing on autopilot isn’t going to optimize your opportunity to make money with social media.

Contingency planning should also be part of your social media marketing plan. Social media marketing is, by its nature, less predictable. You never know when someone is going to say something off the wall or where they’re going to choose to say it. You need a contingency plan so when something bad happens, you’re ready with a response.

Recently, Jesse from Jess3 behaved badly at a conference. I wasn’t there, so I don’t know the details. The important thing is he quickly responded and apologized for his poor behavior before others started complaining about it.

1. Measure, analyze, respond

Social media is great because there’s so much information available, but don’t get sidetracked with vanity metrics like # of Fans or Followers. These don’t translate well to conversion, so keep you eye on the ball. Assess things related to making money with social media — things like reach, SEO, and conversion. Be sure to assesses these metrics in a way that helps you focus your efforts on creating more content that performs well.

Don’t bury your head in the sand. Listen. It’s important, as mentioned above, the listen and respond to both positive and negative comments and answer questions quickly. To find out more, go to:

Internet Success In the 21st Century – How can it work for you?

Everyone Is Looking For The Right Internet Business

Let’s face it, most people are sick and tired of working day in and day out, busting their humps just to come to the end of the month and see all their hard earned cash go right back out to bills and other obligations. With Inflation and the cost of EVERYTHING going up, people’s incomes are not going up with the rising cost of goods.

What that does is causes your own personal deficit of rising credit card bills and going backwards instead of forward in your financial state.

Basically, your lacking leverage in your life.

When it’s just you trading your time for dollars, you have NO leverage. Your getting paid what the job is worth, NOT what your worth, right?

With that being the case, why is it that people get stuck in that hamster wheel and aren’t willing to raise what I call their “Risk” tolerance.

You see, every successful person has a HIGH level of risk tolerance, meaning they are not afraid to throw resources, meaning your time and money at an opportunity and work it until it works.

internet businessIf you see people having success anywhere, the best thing to do is to get around them and earn their time. Applied knowledge is power and when you can get information and have a platform to apply that information for profit, GO FOR IT and stop being so skeptical.

Skeptics remain broke most of their lives because they are “Closed” to new information. Thinking that you know everything is the most dangerous place anyone can be. Always be open to new opportunities when they come your way.

To make the big money, you need to get what I call, re-educated. You need to open yourself back up to education and learning new skills and applying them immediately like your life depends on it.

3 Quick Ways To Reduce Unsubscribes

You work hard to get people to subscribe to your businesses emails. So when someone indicates that they might be disengaged and/or no longer interested in what you have to say (by clicking on your emails unsubscribe link), you ought to think about whether there are any tactics that you can employ to keep hold of them and encourage them to stay with you.

Put it this way – if someone had regularly been visiting your bricks and mortar store, and one day announced that they were leaving and never wanted to see you again, it’s unlikely that you’d simply say “thank you” and watch them walk out of the door. Instead, you’d want to know why they were leaving and what you could do to tempt them to stay. Your email efforts should be no different.

Want some ideas? Here are 3 that might just work…

LoveIncentivise:

Make them fall in love with your business again. Show them how much you value them with special sales, free offers and discount codes for subscribers only. Remind potential unsubscribers of this on the unsubscribe pages.

Familiarise:

Ensure your unsubscribe form captures the reason why they’ve unsubscribed. Are you emailing them too often? Not enough? Is your content not relevant? Although you may not be able to stop someone unsubscribing this way, it will undoubtedly help you to improve your subscribers’ experience going forward.

Personalise:

Offer your potential unsubscriber different relevancy and frequency options. This way a subscriber might
simply choose to hear from you less rather than not at all. Groupon do this well.  As you can see in the

grouponscreen shot on the left, they allow people to reduce their email frequency and choose exactly what they’d like to hear about as well as offering the option to unsubscribe from all emails.

Offering this option allows Groupon to hang on to more of their valuable subscribers by delivering them only content and offers that are relevant.

Why You Should Market Like You (Want to) Cook

Portent Marketing Recipe

Great marketing should be mouthwatering, scrumptious, and satisfying. Don’t you want customers pining for your next email, devouring every bit of information, and anxiously awaiting more?

We don’t always think about marketing in terms of a delicious meal, but restaurants and marketers ultimately have the same goals. Give customers a taste of something yummy, satisfy their appetites, and keep them coming back for more.

Cooks have the advantage because they directly appeal to one of the most basic human needs (nourishment) and there are few things—if any—more satisfying than the perfect combination of dishes (okay, maybe the perfect combination of dishes and beverages). For me, few things beat a perfectly seared medium-rare fatty ribeye steak with a bold juicy red wine.

If we start thinking about the reactions we evoke from customers in the same way that culinary masterminds do, we can appeal more to their basic needs and desires, achieving maximum satisfaction for them while delivering profitability to us.

Here are five ways we can apply the secrets of successful kitchens and gastronomy to our marketing plans.

1. Be creative

Both marketing and cooking encourage and allow endless creativity and innovation. This is the magical allure of each.

But do not abuse the creativity by straying too far from your core competency. Find ways to innovate and expand your audience from within your brand voice and image.

If you’re looking for a new interpretation of the s’mores sandwich—of course, a waste of time because it’s perfect—don’t try to make it more savory with a garlic aioli. When sprucing up a traditional French dish, a Tex-Mex flare might not be the most cohesive approach.

On the other hand, lemongrass matzo ball soup (it even sounds delicious) is a brilliant and delightful play on the traditional dish.

That’s what you want to be.

In the marketing world if you envision creating a viral video, a piece of highly shareable content, or something to engage a new audience, think about what’s on your menu. How can you take what you already do well, and elevate it by adding a new dimension?

Starbucks’ #spreadthecheer hashtag on Twitter this past fall is a great example of a discombobulated marketing flavor profile. Yes, it’s a thing. This unfortunately coincided with widespread public criticism of Starbucks’ labor practices and questionable corporate tax policy. Starbucks did not consider how all of the elements would mesh, resulting in the equivalent of a lemon-curd mocha. Cheer was not spread.

Instead, take a lesson from something brilliantly simple like the Extreme Diet Coke & Mentos Experiment. A perfect balance of two things many people like—Diet Coke and Mentos—combined with a few things everyone loves—a sweet bass line, theatrics, and synchronized fountains—yields over 16 million views. That’s tasty!

2. Time it right

Whether cooking a delicious meal or brainstorming marketing ideas, keen awareness of your surroundings is imperative. Both require multi-tasking. When you know what’s happening, new opportunities arise.

Experienced and passionate cooks know that for optimal flavor, it’s best to use the freshest local produce. Ideally, produce should not have a long commute to your table. When selecting vegetables to cook in the midst of Washington (Portent is located in Seattle) winter, discerning chefs try to stay away from corn—it couldn’t have come from anywhere local because it’s primarily a summer vegetable. Instead, one might opt for the kale or apropos snow peas because they are winter vegetables more likely to be sourced closer to home.

Whether taking advantage of the best seasonal produce or a trending topic for your marketing plan, utilize convenience and existing opportunities whenever possible.

If I planned this blog post better, I could have coordinated it with the “Top Chef: Seattle” season finale last month. (There would have been a lot of searches around “top chef.”)

Check the calendar, look for upcoming holidays and identify potential opportunities to coordinate with events that already attract a large audience like the Super Bowl. How about a campaign for donating a percentage of your April revenues to a charity supporting Earth Day on April 20? Do you have a grand idea to coincide with the increasing ads for products and gifts targeted towards Mother’s Day on May 12?

3. Practice good management

Gordon Ramsay has a very distinct approach to managing his personnel and TV show participants: bitch, yell, intimidate, and then deliver just the right amount of sincere praise (when it’s due)—all of it in an entertainingly muddy British accent.

Gordon Ramsay Meme

Iron Chef Morimoto is more demure and quiet with a head down approach. (When you make ridiculously innovative and incredible food for that long, people drop everything to listen at a second’s notice.)

The chefs have different styles of communication, but they both balance all of the moving parts of their kitchen with impeccable timing. They know every ingredient and item their sous chefs prepare. This doesn’t come off the cuff; it’s strategically organized so that everyone knows their role.

First choose a solid team able to execute your general marketing idea. Consider the theme of your campaign: what is the flavor profile? When that’s solidified, determine a specific timeline for completion of each piece and decide if that piece is a dish served independently or assembled into a grander meal.

If the campaign involves an aspect of outreach (which it likely should), assign someone to research relevant parties, organizations, and people to contact in advance. But remember: asking people to help or participate never bears fruit immediately. Account for an estimated time frame to hear back from contacts and build it into the deadline for completing outreach.

Are the proper discussion points, graphics, and videos prepared for your social media team to deliver on Facebook and Twitter? Perfect timing requires the timeline and all supporting materials to be ready well in advance.

When cooking, you must ensure the excellence of every ingredient. In business and marketing, if each piece of the campaign isn’t quality by itself, it will only bring down the entire dish. Realistically, things happen on the fly all of the time, but it’s always best to account for error and create as much time for review as possible.

This boils down to another element of timing: if the copy and personnel are in place to contact potential supporters, but the graphics and media aren’t ready, it can’t happen. Everything must be ready at the right time.

4. Adjust as needed

When steak runs out and the kitchen has to 86 (cancel) the dish, great chefs in nimble kitchens see an opportunity to create a new nightly special by using excess available ingredients from other menu items.

For example, a customer writes a scathing review on your Facebook wall. Rather than ignoring it or responding defensively, use the situation as an opportunity to showcase stellar customer service: respond to it directly and apologetically, offering multiple solutions to fix the problem, replace the product, or offer a free trial. This turns what could be a blemish on your profile into a demonstration of high quality, genuine customer service.

Or maybe you didn’t sell all of your discounted flash sale products, leaving you with excess inventory. Instead of leaving it to collect dust in your online store, use each item as part of an advertised giveaway to collect email addresses or increase your social following. Be creative to continue getting value from that inventory.

5. Present it tastefully

Chefs taste as they cook to ensure that all components of the dish and meal (including its marketability) are on point. That means tasty, unique, and cohesive.

The final product is only as good as the sum of its parts, or only as good as the weakest link, or insert other overused business cliché here. (These sayings are overused for a reason.)

Quality control at each step is essential. That doesn’t mean micro-managing and smothering creativity, but there must be adequate time to check every element.

When delivering a dish or final product, make it attractive. People eat with their eyes and their nose before ever putting anything in their mouth. It’s a mélange of the senses building to the most pleasurable and successful experience possible. That is the crux of both brilliant cuisine and marketing.

We don’t want our customers to just “go through the motions” by clicking on our advertisements or entering an email address—both are the equivalent of eating a bland meal.  We want them overwhelmed with excitement to get more information, join our community, or sign up for a trial.

This pork marketing campaign is a great example. A display ad showing an enticing image appears on a cooking site—great initial steps with effective audience targeting and appealing creative.

Caribbean Pork Chops Image

Click on the ad and it takes me directly to the website showing: a great slogan (entirely echoing my sentiments that pork makes everything better), beautiful images of delicious pork goodness, links to a variety of recipes thus broadening appeal (people love options), an easy recipe video, and a call to action inviting users to share recipes.

This isn’t perfect and it doesn’t apply to all forms of marketing, but in essence this contains many of the core concepts we want our campaigns to echo.
  • Targeted audience
  • Enticing creativity
  • Engaging content
  • Succinct and appropriate call to action
These aren’t brand new concepts to us as marketers, but next time you’re planning a marketing campaign, or even a one-off email, try a new approach.

Think about your favorite restaurant (your mother’s kitchen counts) and the feelings you experience there. It can be anything from a dimly lit romantic setting to childhood nostalgia.  Then ask yourself: what do you experience when eating the meal? Can you imagine the presentation, recall the smell and excitement? At the end of the meal do you feel entirely satisfied or crave more?

Now, change your approach to best evoke these feelings and reactions from your customers to get them raving and coming back with their friends.

4 Easy Ways to Keep Yourself Sane When Working from Home

4 Easy Ways to Keep Yourself Sane When Working from Home image Home office 300x199Working from home isn’t an anomaly like it used to be in the old days. With the rise of SEO, online marketing and other web-based industries, it’s becoming commonplace for professionals to forego the morning commute in favor of their home office. However, while telecommuting certainly has its benefits, it also has it’s downsides as well. Working a few feet away from your living room can wreak havoc on your productivity, and the lack of face-to-face communication can leave you lonely and sometimes even depressed. As a result, anyone thinking about moving their job back to the homestead should follow these easy steps to stay happy, fit, and functional during the day.

1.      Force yourself to go outside. The freedom to work all day without putting on pants sounds great in theory, but it can turn you into a hermit if you aren’t careful.  In order to keep yourself mentally and physically fit, schedule regular breaks that force you to go outside. Take a jog in the morning or spend some time lifting weights at the gym. If you’re worried about taking such a long break from your work, then just take an hour to go work in a coffee shop or a library. Any change of scenery will do you good.

2.      Spread out your work. You might find that without other people around to distract you, you can get all of your work done by 2pm every day. This might be exciting at first, but eventually all of those free afternoons will start to become boring and even oppressive. If your spouse or friends work regular jobs, try to spread out your day so that you finish at roughly the same time they do. Start later in the morning and take breaks between assignments to read a book or play a game before resuming your work. Though it might seem counterintuitive, lengthening your day will actually make you happier and more productive in the long run.
3.      Have lunch with others. Chatting with co-workers through their laptops doesn’t exactly fulfill your basic human need for social interaction. Luckily, you can address this by making good use of your lunch breaks. Schedule lunches with family and friends and your fellow employees every day of the week. This will give you a chance to get out and socialize with people face-to-face, as well as providing you with impetus to brush your teeth and get dressed every morning.

4.      Set boundaries. When you’re not operating on a fixed schedule, it’s all too easy to let your work time bleed into your personal time. This can cause problems when you find yourself working every weekend and frantically responding to emails during family dinners. Maintain a healthy work-life balance by setting boundaries on your work time.  For instance, you might institute a policy where you don’t open emails after 6pm and only allow yourself to work two Saturdays a month.  Find a schedule that works for you and stick to it so that you don’t come to loathe your smart phone’s inbox function.

Working from home can be extremely liberating, but only if you approach it with proper mindset. When you decide to telecommute, make sure you take regular breaks and try not to let your work time interfere with your personal time (and vice versa). Though it might take some getting used to, if you can follow these simple rules for working from home you can enjoy a happy, healthy and productive career for years to come.

Who Should Your Business Follow On Twitter?

Following the right accounts on Twitter is just as important as tweeting the right content. Following certain accounts can increase your business’ profile, both on Twitter and in your area, by connecting your business with your customers and local media outlets.

By following trendsetters within your industry, you can stay abreast of interesting and important developments that may affect your company. Also, Twitter can be used to keep an eye on the activity of your main competitors, as well as the larger companies you want your own business to emulate.

You will be able to see all the public tweets of the people you follow in your stream. Follow a diverse group of accounts to ensure that you get the most out of the service.

Industry leaders

Look for some of the bigger businesses that work in your industry. If you are opening a bakery why not check out Millie’s Cookies, Cinnabon or Dunkin’ Donuts. If you run a sportswear shop, have a look at Nike, Adidas or Puma.

You can monitor the leaders in your industry by following their activity on Twitter . Perhaps they will use the service in a way that you hadn’t thought of to promote themselves. Imitate their more successful or innovative ideas.

Follow the companies that provide you with your stock. Big brands often tweet about new product releases. Say Nike football boots are one of your sports shop’s best selling products, if Nike were to tweet about a new football boot you could retweet it on your business page, alerting your followers.

You could then make sure that your shop was one of the first in your area to get the boot in stock and tweet about it, attracting more customers to your store.

Industry Voices and the Media

Follow the accounts of those in your industry whose views are respected. Look for the accounts with the most followers in your network and, perhaps more importantly, those that are getting the most retweets and favourites.

Following these accounts could lead to interactions with them, making their followers aware of your business. Their tweets may also prove to be very informative and useful to your business, tweets that you could retweet yourself.

Search for the Twitter accounts of the media sources in your local area. To do this, you can use the “Browse categories” list in the Discover tab, or you can use websites like Wefollow, Muck Rack and Twellow.

Building a relationship with newspapers, magazine publishers and radio stations on Twitter could persuade them to feature your business in articles and reviews.

Customers

When your business is just starting out on Twitter, it is a good idea to follow some of your current and favourite customers. Ask for your customers Twitter handles or email addresses, then use this information to search for them on the site.

People use Twitter to interact with brands and business. Following your customers will show them that you want to interact with them on the site, making them feel valued. Following customers will also make them aware that you are on Twitter and, if they thank you for the follow, it will make their followers aware of your business’ Twitter profile as well.

Competitors

Use Twitter to keep an eye on your competitors. Many of your rivals will already have Twitter accounts on which they will post company information and updates. If you can’t find a competitor type their email address into Twitter’s search engine, or have a look for their Twitter handle on their web page.

If you don’t want your competitors to necessarily know that you are following them, use a private Twitter list to keep tabs on them. You can follow lists without following the Twitter accounts listed within them.

Followers

There are two opposing schools of thought concerning follow-backs. Some say that businesses should follow all the users (those proven to be humans and not robots) that follow them, while others argue that businesses should only follow those more active and influential on Twitter.

The people who think that businesses should try to follow as many followers back as possible argue that not only does it show potential customers that the company appreciates their support and cares about their opinions, it also provides users with a way to communicate with companies privately on Twitter via direct messaging – a fantastic customer service tool.

The opposing argument, though obvious, is a good one: too many followed accounts clog up a business’ Twitter stream and bombard it with lower quality information.

If your company is not already on Twitter, it is unlikely that it is well-known. I suggest following as many people back as you can (having made certain that they are people) as this will help build your profile on Twitter, as well as off it.

Suggestions

On your Business’ Twitter home page there is a small list of suggestions entitled “Who To Follow”. In this list, Twitter collates accounts that you could follow based on your interests, activity and the people you follow. Clicking “follow” on one of the suggestions opens up a larger list of options: Twitter encourages users to follow as many accounts as possible to increase engagement and networking on the site.

There is also a longer list in the discover tab with even more suggestions of who your business should follow. Often these suggestions are very good, so it is worth having a look at this list – which is constantly updating itself – every week or so.

Others

Of course, you don’t just have to follow those within your industry or the people who follow you first. Why not follow the accounts of celebrities or people who interest you? Following interesting accounts may provide you with inspiration when you can’t think what to tweet, while interacting with celebrities might lead to an endorsement.

You should be using Twitter to display how interesting and multifaceted your business can be, so following the right mix of people can really help imbue your company’s Twitter account with more personality.

How To Tweet To A Better Income

Tweet your way to making more money! Sounds like a false promise, doesn’t it? Most people don’t really consider Twitter to be a money making tool, mostly because they use it for the purpose it was initially intended for: to stay in touch with family and friends. But for anyone who runs a blog or a business knows, Twitter has become an extremely powerful tool in getting and keeping customers, and making money – all in 140 characters or less.

If you’re looking for ways to really optimize your Twitter to make either some extra spending money, or to completely replace your current income, know that it is possible. While there are a number of different ways to do this, we’re going to highlight the 4 ways that we found were most successful for Twitter users.

Direct Advertising

Just recently a news story came out about Khloe Kardashian tweeting to her Twitter followers to send a specific text to the WWF, and then a $10 donation would be made to WWF per text. Within two short days, she raised over $6000 just by asking her followers to do this. Now THAT’S good advertising.
Regardless of what your feelings may be when it comes to the Kardashian clan, it’s easy to see that having someone with enough Twitter followers endorse a particular product or give a particular message will result in action. So if you have enough followers, you can actually use your Twitter account to endorse products of services on behalf of advertisers, and then encourage your followers to take action. Alternatively, you can simply promote a new product by bringing it to the attention of your followers, telling them why it’s great and how they can benefit.

Now you may be saying to yourself, “This won’t work for me; I don’t have any followers!” You may not have too many followers now, but it’s really not too hard to boost the number of people who follow you. You can use Twitter to hunt down people in your area who have the same interest as you, and you can then “follow” them. 9 times out of 10 people you follow will follow you too. Find blogs and forums that are of your interest and always include a “Follow me on Twitter” type message at the bottom and give them your name. Make yourself as accessible as possible.

TIP: Never forget just how valuable #hashtags can be. Hashtags are a great way to easily keep track of responses, as well as to follow the trail to see where your Twitter messages have ended up. Create appropriate hashtags for the products or services that you promote – this will also help maintain brand awareness.

Paid Review

This is similar to a direct advertisement, but there’s a twist to it. Instead of simply telling your followers, “Hey! Try this!” you are actually paid by an advertiser to write a review about a product. You can post the review on your blog or website, and then hit up Twitter and tell people about the product or service.

As an alternative to promoting products and services, you can also promote people. There are a ton of individuals out there who want to get noticed and who may actually be willing to drop some cash to get you to spread the word about their good name. These people may be bloggers, website owners, or web developers, for example. Make sure you offer these services to up-and-coming businesses and bloggers. You may be surprised by how much money you can make.

TIP: In the world of bloggers, paid reviews for products and services are somewhat frowned upon. Our recommendation is that if you do a paid review, you include in your blog post that it is just that – a paid review. If you don’t tell your followers, someone else will, which can completely destroy your credibility.

Affiliate Marketing

Affiliate marketing works incredibly well with Twitter, and you can easily do this while using any of the promotional strategies above. You can provide affiliate links to the product or service you are promoting.

TIP: To really capitalize on space, make sure you use the TinyURL.com service. This will shrink any website address so you have more character space to write about the product.

If you choose to do affiliate marketing, it’s a wise idea to also create a landing page or sales page. You can send any followers to your landing page too rather than to your affiliate marketing link.

The best way to really optimize your affiliate marketing endeavour is to make sure that whatever product it is that you’re marketing is related to your niche. There are a ton of junk affiliate marketing products out there, like “get rich quick” and “lose weight fast” schemes. Go for quality products that you feel passionate and excited about!

Sponsored Contest

This is another great option for anyone who has a good amount of followers. With sponsored contests, an advertising agency may want to run some sort of contest on Twitter to either a) get feedback about their product or service, or b) generate brand awareness. You then have the opportunity to step in and run the contest, and of course get some good money out of the deal.
If you were to create a contest to gather some feedback, a good example of a contest you could create would be, “What do you HATE about ‘x’ product?” The advertiser can then keep track of your followers’ responses and get some valuable marketing information. A random person can be chosen as a winner and receive a prize from the advertiser.

You can drum up some brand awareness for an advertiser too by having a contest such as “Tell us why you love ‘x’ Service in 140 characters or less!” and again offer a neat prize as provided by the advertiser.

TIP: You may also want to look into ‘sponsored’ advertisements. Re-tweeting is a powerful thing, especially if you want to create some brand awareness, so why not encourage people to re-tweet a message? A message like “Loving #MyNewSmartphone! Retweet this message and win a NEW HTC PHONE!”

10 Tips to Increase Blog Traffic with Facebook

Facebook is the most popular social networking site with over 350 million members. Not only is it a great tool to connect with friends, family, colleagues and more across the world, but it's also a great tool to increase traffic to your blog. Following are 10 tips to increase blog traffic with Facebook.

1. Complete Your Profile Strategically

Consider your goals for your Facebook profile.  If you want to use it as a tool to establish yourself as an expert in your field and drive traffic to your blog, then you need to make sure your profile includes the information to support your expertise.  Be careful about the types of photos, videos, and personal interests you include in your profile though.  To use Facebook as a tool to drive traffic to your blog, you'll need to make a lot of Facebook friends, and it's likely you won't want them all to see those pictures of you drinking in college!

2. Find Friends

Use the search tool to find people on Facebook.  You can search by name, company, school, and more.  You don't need to know a person before you request to be their friend on Facebook.  The worst that can happen is that they decline or ignore your request, and the best that can happen is that they become a part of your Facebook network!  You can also find people to friend by looking through the friends of people you're already friends with and looking through Facebook groups and pages to find people with similar interests to your own.  When you find people who match your criteria and might be interested in your blog content, go ahead and send them a friend request!

3. Join Groups or Create Your Own Group

You can create a group for any topic or reason on Facebook and invite people to join it.  Search for groups related to your blog's topic, and then join those groups and get active in the conversations going on in those groups.  If you can't find just the right Facebook group to support your efforts to drive traffic to your blog, create one!  You can send out group invitations to all of your Facebook friends.

4. Create a Facebook Page and Become a Fan of Other Facebook Pages

The Facebook page feature is another great way to network with the Facebook audience. You can become a fan of existing Facebook pages (just search for ones related to your blog and then join the converation), and you can create your own. Facebook pages can only be created by official representatives for a company, brand or celebrity. Your blog could be considered a brand, so go ahead and create a Facebook page for your blog. Then be sure to feed your blog's content into your Facebook page status updates and continually add interesting information to it to keep the conversation going.

5. Link Your Other Social Accounts to Your Facebook Profile and Page

There are many tools available to help you build a great Facebook profile and/or page that can drive traffic directly and indirectly to your blog. Take the time to link your blog's RSS feed to your status updates, link your Twitter feed, SlideShare content, and so on to your Facebook profile or page. This way, your updates appear in your status stream for all of your friends to see. In some cases, a new tab is added to your Facebook profile or page, so content from some other services (such as SlideShare) is always easy to find.

6. Promote Your Facebook Link

Include your Facebook link in your blog's sidebar, in your email signature, and anywhere else you can think of to encourage more people to find you and send you a Facebook friend request.

7. Be Active

Don't just create your Facebook profile, page or group and then disappear. In order for your Facebook efforts to drive traffic to your blog, you need to actively update your status, share great content, join conversations, and engage with other people. By building relationships with your Facebook friends, you can indirectly grow your blog's audience, too.

8. Acknowledge and Reciprocate

It's one thing to make friends on Facebook but it's another thing entirely to build relationships with them. Don't just spend all of your Facebook time updating your own profile and sharing your own content. Instead, spend the majority of your Facebook time commenting on other people's statuses and conversations, sharing other people's great content, responding to direct messages, and so on.

9. Place a Facebook Ad

Facebook ads are fairly inexpensive, can be targeted, and can raise awareness of your blog, your Facebook page, or anything else you want to advertise.

10. Be Human

Facebook has a very personal edge to it. Unlike LinkedIn, which leans more toward a business edge, Facebook users expect members to be human, not promotional. With that in mind, mix your status updates and content between promotional information and entertaining, personal updates (just don't get too personal, remember how many people can see your Facebook updates).
